Duara is built and operated by Pluribus Tech Limited, based in Nairobi, Kenya. You can delete your Duara account at any time, and this page explains how — in plain terms, so it makes sense even if you no longer have the app.

There are two ways to ask us to delete your account. Both lead to exactly the same process.

This is the part people most often misread, so here it is in full.

Once the 14 days have passed, the following are permanently removed and cannot be recovered:

• Your login credentials. You can sign up again later with the same email address if you want to.
• Your name, phone number and bio.
• Your profile photo, including the stored image file.

A chama is a shared pot. If one member's financial history simply vanished, every other member's balance would be wrong and the group's books would no longer add up. So the group's records stay — but your identity is taken out of them.

After deletion, the following remain:

Documents your groups generated before your deletion — constitutions, financial reports, loan agreements, meeting minutes — have your name written into the file itself. Each document is fixed by a cryptographic hash taken at the moment it is created, so any later change to the file would break that hash and be detectable. Editing your name out of documents that have already been generated would invalidate them, so those documents keep your name.

Documents generated after your deletion show "Former member" in place of your name.

Duara uses third-party analytics and crash-reporting services to understand how the app is used and to diagnose errors. Once your deletion becomes permanent, we instruct these providers — along with our email provider — to erase the data they hold about you. This normally completes within 30 days of the deletion, which is longer than the 14–15 days it takes us to remove the data we hold ourselves.

Purchase records held by RevenueCat are the exception: Kenyan tax law requires financial records to be kept for five years after your last transaction. Those records contain your purchase history and subscription dates, not your name, phone number, or group activity.

The anonymized record of your account, and the group financial history tied to your activity, are retained indefinitely. A group's audit trail has no natural expiry — a member may need to refer back to it years later — so we do not put a fixed end date on it.

"Anonymized" here means the identifying information has been removed and the record can no longer be used to identify you.

Deleting your account does not cancel or settle any outstanding loans, unpaid fines or balances. They remain part of the group's records. After deletion you can no longer see or reach them through Duara, but they are not written off.

If we change how account deletion works, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date below, and — where the change is material — notify you in the app.
